The Festival of Lights in Lyon

The Festival of Lights takes place every year around 8 December. The 2026 edition runs from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December. It is free and draws about 2 million visitors over four evenings.

A tradition born in 1852

On 8 December 1852, the inauguration of a statue of the Virgin on the Fourvière chapel was postponed because of rain. That evening the sky cleared and Lyon residents spontaneously put candles in their windows. The custom, which also recalls a vow made in 1643 during a plague epidemic, has lasted ever since.

A festival since 1999

Since 1999 the City has organised an international festival of light: lighting artists, projections on façades, installations on squares and in the traboules. The city draws on its Plan Lumière, launched in 1989, and on LUCI, the international association born in Lyon.
