Practical information for your stay in Lyon

Where to find the tourist office, which numbers to call in an emergency, where to recover a lost item and which insurance to check: the essentials to know before or during your stay.

The tourist office

ONLYLYON Tourisme et Congrès, the metropolitan tourist office, is on place Bellecour (Lyon 2nd). It opens every day from 9 am to 6 pm, except 25 December and 1 January, and sells the Lyon City Card. Phone: +33 4 72 77 69 69; website: visiterlyon.com. As of 25 October 2026, reception is temporarily at the Rectangle, on place Bellecour on the Saône side, after the pavilion fire of 17 October: check the website before you go.

Emergency numbers

112 is the European emergency number. In France, 15 calls the ambulance service (SAMU), 17 the police and 18 the fire brigade. Deaf or hard-of-hearing people can reach emergency services by text message on 114. In Lyon, SOS Médecins answers day and night on 04 78 83 51 51 or 36 24; the duty pharmacy line is 32 37, the poison centre 04 72 11 69 11 and the helpline for women victims of violence 39 19.

Lost property

The City of Lyon's service is at 65 rue du Bourbonnais (Lyon 9th), open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30 am to 12 noon and from 1 pm to 4:30 pm; phone: 04 78 47 72 89. Items are kept for six months. Bring photo ID, and the IMEI number for a phone.

Safety

Lyon is a safe city, but as anywhere, keep your wallet and phone out of reach of wandering hands in crowds. If you feel in danger, step into a shop displaying the “Ici, demandez Angela” sticker and ask for Angela: staff know how to react.

Insurance and health

Paying for your trip by bank card often brings cover for luggage and cancellation: ask your bank for the details. If it is not enough, extra travel insurance costs little and can help a lot. EU travellers can bring their European Health Insurance Card.
